Ladakh is a high-altitude region in modern-day northern india that shares much of its cultural history with tibet. though often called ‘indian tibet’, ladakh maintained independence throughout much of its history, becoming the hub of textile trade between western tibet and mughal, and later British, India.
as an epicentre of trade, leh, ladakh’s capital, was the meeting place of merchants from samarqand to lhasa, and from kashmir to rajasthan.
