About Jordan Quill

Jordan currently a PhD candidate in the History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, specialising in the architecture and textiles of Northern India during the early modern period (c.1550-1800).

He holds an MPhil in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies at the University of Oxford, where he gained the basic skills needed to speak, read and write in Tibetan, which he has developed and accelerated upon graduating in the Himalayan village of McLeodganj, seat of the Tibetan Government in Exile, and His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama.

During his BA degree in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute, Jordan concentrated on the arts of Timurid Central Asia, the Medieval Mediterranean, and Mughal India, which gave him a firm base of knowledge covering a wide geographical and historical range.

Jordan has also worked for a number of years at the internationally renowned antique Indian textiles gallery Joss Graham in central London.

Alongside publishing on Himalayan arts and continuing to study Tibetan, he is now also learning Persian and Hindi as he completes his PhD thesis.

This website aims to inspire others to learn about the arts, cultures and languages of the Himalayas, India and Tibet. TRAVEL CONSULTANCY

THANGKA PAINTING

Jordan Quill works exclusively with the Lama family in the painting of contemporary thangkas, actively encouraging the making of high-quality works of Himalayan art. The Lamas are Tamang (རྟ་དམག་/तामाङ), originating in Nepal and speaking a Tibeto-Burman language that shares much of its vocabulary with Tibetan.

A thangka is a traditional painting depicting Buddhist deities, mantras or mandalas. Thangka painting has been practiced for many centuries throughout Tibet and the Himalayas, and is one of, if not the, art form that is most closely associated with Tibetan Buddhism.

Purchasing a thangka here will directly support the artist who painted it.

View a range of thangka available for purchase here.

As well as having a range of thangka paintings readily available to choose from, it is also possible to see if a specific painting is available but not yet listed on the website.

Jordan has access to a vast range of paintings based in Northern India, and it is therefore often possible to locate the perfect work of art, ready and available for shipping.

If the perfect painting is not currently available, it may be possible to commission one of your own.

Painting time depends on the size and quality and this can be discussed by getting in touch via the form on the website page.
